The Maine Jewelers Association voted Ron Smith of Republic Jewelry as Best in Show in their 2002 Jewelry Design Contest. Entries from all over the state were on display at the annual meeting as the judges browsed the exquisite original pieces. The items are judged on overall design, originality, marketability, practicality/wearability and craftsmanship by a panel of experts from all over Maine. Awards are given for two categories Amazingly both of the top award for each category along with the overall Best of Show went to Ron Smith, Master Jeweler at Republic Jewelry in Auburn. The elegant green tourmaline ring which was judged Best of Show for the state will be sent to New York in January where it will be Maine's entry for the Jewelers of America National Jewelers Competition. The Best of Show piece shown to both sides is a 2.59ct Green Tourmaline set in 18kt yellow gold with 12 princess cut Diamonds totaling 1.40ct tw. His other entry which won 1st place in it's category is a 2.64ct Pink Tourmaline set in 18kt yellow gold with 4- .15ct round brilliant cut Diamonds bezel set in the side of the ring. |

"I was extremely excited to win.", states Ron Smith. "It is an honor to represent Maine in the national competition and I really hope we win. I love my job and enjoy having the opportunity to be able to create pieces of jewelry that people love and that will be cherished for a lifetime. Not many people are able to have a job that grants them the creativity I am able to have and it's exciting. I am happy to see a customer's face light up when they see an item I have crafted for them but to be judged the best in the state by my peers within the jewelry industry is overwhelming." Mr. Smith has been a goldsmith for over 30 years. Along with being the top goldsmith in the state he is also a certified gemologist and expert engraver.
